History

SPCA was founded in Hong Kong in 1903, it operated mainly on volunteer basis until 1914. It was suspended due to the outbreak of world war I, but after a meeting and discussion in 1921 about the branch of SPCA, the first dog’s home opened in Waterloo road, Kowloon by Lady Ho Tung in 1922. Lady Ho Tung is a committee member & driving force in SPCA. Due to the loss of the Waterloo road site, a new and expanded boarding kennel was opened in Kowloon city funded by Sir Robert and Lady Ho Tung in December 1934. In 1978, SPCA was finally recognized by the society as the “Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals”(RSPCA) (Source).
