Did you ever think saving an animal would change their entire life forever?

Did you ever think of saving an animal would change their entire life forever? The issues of people being cruel to animals, such as animal abuse, animal neglect, and the 5 freedoms of animals welfare. Animals 5 freedoms is similar to the 3 L’s that represent human quality of life. The 5 freedoms includes freedom from hunger & thirst, discomfort, injury, pain, or disease, to express normal behaviour, fear and distress. The animals without the 5 freedoms are indicated as low quality of life (Detail & Simple).

With that being said, there are no reasons animals need to suffer from such unnecessary pain, they do not deserve to be treated cruelly, such as cruelly beat, tortures, and neglects/carelessness to supply animals with sufficient food and fresh water. Fortunately, under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance, it is an offence to treat animals cruelly or to cause them unnecessary pain or suffering. This includes acts of violence, neglects or apathy, which the maximum penalty is imprison for 3 years and $20,000 fine (Government or SPCA).

The second reason is because without meeting the 5 freedoms, the owner will break the animal’s right. Animals with low quality of life representing not meeting the 5 freedoms, therefore the owner needs to take responsibility of penalty for being cruel to their animals. By breaking the government rule of prevention of cruelty to animals ordinance 169, the maximum penalty is to pay a fine of $200,000 and to be imprison for 3 years.

To be more specific about the 5 freedoms, here are the definition. Freedom from hunger and thirst, this includes access to fresh water and other nutrients to maintain in a healthy condition. Freedom from discomfort, this includes providing an environment which is comfortable for the animals, such as a shelter or resting area. Freedom from injury, pain, or disease, this includes appropriate treatment for injured animals . Freedom to express normal behaviour, this includes providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal's own kind. Freedom from fear or distress, this includes avoiding animals mental suffering (Source). Remember,“Saving one animal won’t change the world, but it will change the world for them” was once quoted by an anonymous author.

The first reason this issue is extremely important because, animals doesn’t meet the 5 freedoms of animals welfare. All 5 freedoms are related and connected to each other. Insufficient food and water is similar to discomfort of animals, in other words not providing the fundamental materials such as as nutrients, plus appropriate environment such as shelter and comfortable resting area for animals. Whereas discomfort of animals can lead them unable to express normal behaviour, without appropriate environment such as shelter, they won’t have sufficient space to exercise and move around. With that being said, unable to express normal behaviour can lead to fear and distress. Animals such as large type of dog that needs lots of space to run around will create depression, similarly to human’s depression. As animals will lose interest in foods, which create unhealthy diet, and unhealthy animals will result in injury, pain and disease.
